Marriage in the 1950s

What is marriage? Well, let's go back to the 1950s when marriage was a completely different concept than what it is today. Back then, for women, it was all about being a perfect housewife. You may know that term today as being a "stay at home mom". But back in the 1950s, women were considered housewife's because all they did was stay at home, not being allowed to hold a job outside the home because it would be considered and insult for the male of the family. Obviously, the husband would be considered the male of the family. Therefore, a marriage back in the 1950s would be defined as a relationship between a man and a women where the wife would clean, cook, take care of the children, and even look their best for their husband. They didn't have any other choice because back in school it was even required to take a "Home Economics" class in order to learn how to be a good housewife. I know... it may sound silly, but wait until you read some of the "rules" on how to be a housewife back then. This came from a "Home Economics" textbook from the 50s:

1. Have dinner ready
2. Prepare yourself
3. Clear away all clutter
4. Minimize the noise
5 Make him comfortable

And what was the goal of the perfect housewife?

ANSWER: To try to make their home a place of peace and order where their husband could relax!

For all of you ladies out there, would you be a good housewife? Would you even consider marriage back in the 1950s?
